NCEA 1.8 – Significant Connections. Ambition

I believe my understanding of the human quality, Ambition has developed
after reading these three texts, Gattaca, Skulduggery Pleasant: Resurrection, Macbeth and Ozymandias.

As mentioned below Macbeth is spurred on by nothing but Ambitions, all his actions are derived from his ambition.

I have no spur

To prick the sides only
Vaulting ambition, which oerleaps itself
And falls on the other

Act 1, Scene 7
Having ambition as a driving force for some decisions but having it as a driving force for all decisions, this demonstrated later in the play when Macbeth makes a decision with ambition that shouldn’t have, his choice to focus on just himself and his success not caring about the consequences of his decisions is what is wrong with having ambition as someones main school of thought.

This is also similar for  Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem Ozymandias.
This poem is a recording of a conversation between an adventurer and a narrator (this is the person recalling the story), the adventurer tells the narrator about a strange-, destroyed statue in a far away desert, he describes the statues state,

“…Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert…Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies”.

What does survive is a message imprinted on the pastille of the statue, it goes “My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!”. This is quite ironic because all of his ‘works’ are in ruin, this includes the statue, having the statue also in ruin with his visage sunk halfway hints at the fact that we can’t even recognise who this king was and so the memory of the king is lost and the memory of the sculptors skill is remembered and commemorated instead.

The story behind Gattaca is about a man born into a society that discriminate on poor genetics, thinking that they are not as capable as people who are born through eugenics, Vincent a man god born has a goal to travel to Saturn’s moon Titan but people don’t believe he can because he is not an equal. He instead has ambition and focuses on becoming the best he could be, from where his ambition difference from Macbeth’s and Ozymandias is that instead of focusing on becoming the best over all he focuses on his dream and achieves that. This is why he is remembered, doesn’t need to regret his decisions and his life isn’t in ruins.

This is also true for Omen Darkly, he was the second son to a family with a prophecy that the first born would be the one to pull the world out of darkness and Omen was successful in being apart of saving the world from devastation, similar to Vincent when Omen was playing his part in saving the world all he could think of was what people have said to him about how he wasn’t going to amount to anything, but instead of letting these thoughts bring him down he instead held onto them tight and used these thoughts to drive him to achieve. This is quite an amazing achievement because to do this he had to accept himself and understand that it isn’t others that make up someone it is that person that makes up themselves and it is our choice whether we let people have an effect on us, so not only did he achieve but he also as an amazing amount of will power.

So in conclusion I have found that ambition is definitely important to use to challenge yourself, but it also isn’t good to let it control you making ambition a double edged sword, it can drive you to be the best you that you can but it can also over well you and make you make pour decisions and not be as observant of your actions then if you weren’t focused on your ambition.

Significant Connections

Text 1; Macbeth (Macbeth)

Text 2; King (Ozymandias)

Text 3; Vincent Freeman (Gattaca)

Text 4; Omen Darkly (Skulduggery Pleasant)

With Macbeth and Ozymandias both were striving to improve themselves and nothing else, Macbeth in very inhuman ways and probably no different for Ozymandias.

For Macbeth what was quite ironic was that during his drive to gain as much power as he could at any cost, the infrastructure of the society he was running and his relations with his friends were major factures that contributed to his downfall and death. This is similar for Ozymandias’s king of the city of sand, obviously if the king was a good king and deserved the statue the city would still be there but all that is left is a scorching dessert and a fallen statue, this statue with it’s head “visage” half sunken into the sand and half shattered, from the text we are told the statue is meant to draw people’s attention to the kings ‘works’ but not even the statue’s head survived let alone the civilisation that once ruled these lands. The base of the statue had a inscription:

‘My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!’

This is most ironic as mentioned above but also because it is not the king that would be praised for the statue but the sculptors skill, this is shown by the sculptor being able to show the kings ‘passions’ even when partly destroyed. Nameless the sculptor is praised for his skill that is still valued.

For Gattaca Vincent Freeman was striving to prove him self as successful but with his success would bring development and improvement for others, showing that his ambition, but he was not driving to reach the top and become the best but to instead just show that he can achieve more then everyone else thinks, this is also what Omen Darkly strives to achieve more then what everyone/parents believe he can achieve, proving himself as capable.

Vincent Freeman has been told all his life that he will not amount to much because his genes aren’t perfect. What is ironic is that when Vincent achieves something greater then they thought he could, it is them telling him he ‘can’t’ that drives him to become successful. What is also interesting is that he wasn’t striving to be the best, even though he achieved something that no had done before, but in the process of getting to that point he showed to people that even if they didn’t think he could be an equal because of ‘something’ it isn’t true, they just have to work a little harder then the person without that challenge. Omen Darkly is also someone that people don’t think will achieve very much, since he is the second born to a family were the first born is meant to protect the world from the queen of the dark lands, so he is not expected to achieve very much or to the level that his brother will achieve, but before he even turns 13 he helps to stop the world from ending

After reading all 4 texts I feel my understanding of ambition has developed because all 4 texts though similar do show the effects of the characters action in the pursuit of their ambitions both good and bad and the irony that occurs to the character and the characters around them.

NCEA 1.5 Formal Writing, Literary Study

Structure 1
Writing about: Film Gattaca Warning
Message: History repeating itself
Ideas supporting warning:

  1. Ayra master race: The race to trump all races, based on a single person’s ideology. A race of people who look the same, beautiful, strong, intelligent. Eugenics is an extreme version of natural selection, controlled by humans, we pick what we want to survive. Since they can also splice genes, they can remove genetic defects, reducing what someone can die from. How the selected genetic features were chosen was by using aktion T4. Aktion T4 was an extermination action, T4 was used to give reason for exterminating humans with mental or physically injured and it was incurable. To enforce that this was OK also was that they also called it a mercy killing, because they thought that it was better to not live with such burdens, but also to not let the burden fall on anyone else.

  2. Modernist architecture: The buildings having function over form. Similar to the buildings that were made during WWII. The people being the buildings: not being unique but just functioning; “There is no gene for the human spirit”, no one who was made using eugenics has the drive to be great, because they already are. Early 20th C clothes, car and hairstyles, function over form, the society decided that they didn’t need to change the way they make clothes, cars or how they dress their hair, they decided to focus on forwarding science instead of fashion. The filter over the whole film giving it a sorta brown, yellow tinge, the viewer associates that colour with the past.

Andrew Niccol’s film Gattaca presents a warning about the future, for centuries humans have been interested in the development of technology to make there lives easier. While technology gives society strength to explain there ideas and opinions, helping people connect from either side of the globe. With all these great developments occurring so rapidly and only being able to notice the short term affects, we don’t pay attention to  whether the long term effects are positive or negative until it is to late.

Gattaca is a film demonstrating the long term affects of a particular technology on society. Development of technology hasn’t only focused on things that we come to use in our every day lives, we have even developed technology to alter us before we are born, making use live longer, grow stronger or think smarter. Eugenics being the science or belief of improving the genetic quality of the human population.

In the film Jerome is one of the main characters demonstrating the ideals of eugenics. He was born from eugenics, having high cheekbones, blues eyes, strong chin. Society deeming these as the most desirable traits, being the most attractive. These ideals are similar to even identical to the ideals of Nazi Germany.

Vincent is another main character in the film, being the polar opposite to Jerome. Being born naturally (GodBorn), having a random selection of facial and body features. He demonstrates that even within a society that discriminates against people like him, if you have the drive to achieve you can beat anyone, whether they were born naturally or born specifically. There being no gene for the human spirit.

After returning from a celebratory night out, Vincent helps Jerome into bed. Jerome explains to Vincent that on the day he stepped in front of a car, he was as sober as he has ever been. This informs the viewer that his decision was completely voluntary, giving us the impression that when someone is given everything from the beginning we don’t have that drive to become the best we can be because we already have everything we would strive for.

The connection between Gattaca’s eugenic’s and history is the connection to eugenics science during the early 20th century specifically the scientific research occurring during WWII by Nazi Germany. During this time Aktion T4 was declared and anyone that was classified with a mental or physical disability that was genetic would be take and killed. They did this to clean the gene pool of any genetic impurities, so to make the perfect race, the Ayran Race. This is similar to the film but instead of people being killed the people with genetic impurities were either never born or they would be known as “InValid”, giving them less opportunities to succeed and generally being known as inferior.

Eugenics being good in theory but be negative in practice,
this being a warning to us that if we keep focusing on whether we can, instead of whether we should we as a society might be heading down a long and dark road.
who wants to be perfect, not being perfect is what makes us all ourselves,

if we did have eugenics do you think you would have been born?

*Jerome was drunk and said that on the day he lost his legs he was the soberest he had ever been, showing that even the perfect person from eugenics wouldn’t be happy because he wasn’t striving to achieve to be unique because it was all given to him at the start.

Throughout the film we can see several buildings all designed with form over function in mind, this still of architecture is commonly know as modernist architecture.
This concept of architecture was mainly used in the early 20th century during WWII, these structures were generally made of concrete, steel and wide open windows, which was very unusual for the time period.

Geneticist: We want to give your child the best possible start. Believe me, we have enough imperfection built in already. Your child doesn’t need any more additional burdens. Keep in mind, this child is still you. Simply the best of you. You could conceive naturally a thousand times and never get such a result.

Clowns are not what you think they are v0.2:

Introduction: I am sure you know clowns as entertainers/comediennes, they are usually apart of circuses or carnival events, but clowns are not what you think they are, clowns are evil.

Most of us think clowns are funny, acts that people put on at events to entertain us but all that is a rues to give you false sense of security, protecting the clowns from their true intention which is to steal all valuables or data in the town that they are in, so that they can sell them off to buyers and so the clown government can use the income to continue growing.

How this clown empire gets more minions to do their bidding is to brain wash average people into becoming crazy psychopath’s who will stop at nothing to achieve a mission for their masters. If a clown were to brake free of the brain washing, they would have massive brain damage, they wouldn’t be able to fit back into society, so they end up living in poor environments like water drains eating the stray dog, cat or children in a yellow rain jacket’s watching a paper boat’s float down said water drain’s.

An example of a clown gone rogue is psycho bob from the Simpsons he has broken free of the clown government brain washing but didn’t know what to do besides the assignment that was given to him by the clown government which was to kill Bart Simpson and psycho bob continues to target Bart Simpson to achieve his mission.
Krusty the clown is also apart of the clown army but he was half cooked in the brain washing unit and so didn’t become a clown assassin but instead became one of the faces of how the clown government wants you to see clowns, so he continues making kids laugh scream and shout will all the other clowns do evil, steally things.

The Clown government has given each clown a uniform which gives them the abilities to look silly but still be able to steal stuff.

Clowns wear the clothes they were because they give them a tactical advantage when robbing a house:

The main purpose for the clowns baggy clothes are not for exaggerating their body movements but to contain more stolen goods then your average duffel bag or skinny jeans.

Their massive shoes are not for over exaggerating their feet, but to help with scaling roofs and walls of various materials so that they have a verity of entry points to enter a house from.

Their makeup… well it isn’t makeup, it is a mould-able mask used for when the clown is spotted, they could change the shape of their face so to stop the police recognising them if they were to be chased.

The purpose for the red nose is to inject an anaesthetic into someone chasing them or in there way so that they stop chasing them or the clown uses it for reducing the number of people chasing them.

These are just a few of the disqused utensils that a clown has at their disposal.

We aren’t the only species to have to deal with clown menaces, fish have to deal with the dreaded Clown Fish:

This fish is a omnivore that lives in a symbiotic relationship with sea anemone’s, the fish attracts prey to the sea anemone which has spines in it’s tentacles with venom in them, this kills the prey and both the sea anemone and the fish consume the spoils. If there is no prey around for the clown fish to consume, the clown fish will eat the tentacles of the anemone.

A Harlequin a type of comedian related to the clown:

A Harlequin is a type of clown, Harlequins were common in the late 16th century, they were performers who’s general story was that they were entertainers for a master and then they fall in love, the master doesn’t like this so either the Harlequin would run away with the love interest or kill the master and run away with the love interest. Pablo Picasso was known to paint harlequin’s and people think that Picasso had an alter ego who was a Harlequin so even then the clown government excited steal from the rich and the poor.

A more modern example of clowns being evil is an episode from Star trek Voyager Episode 23 Season 2, Some of the Voyager crew and the remaining inhabitants of a destroyed trading post are in cryosleep, but there is an A.I entertaining the participants, when the participants started worrying about if they would survive or not then the A.I responded and created an environment full of clowns and one can only describe as a carnival, the A.I created this environment produced an the environment that it thought the participants would want to be in so since they were scared it produced the carnival, they turned something that some believe to be fun and exciting into a nightmare.

All these ideas produce fear, and fear is a healthy emotion that we shouldn’t get rid of, knowing this information would you still laugh at a clown? I know I would because that is how we deal with fear we laugh in the face of it, when laughing in the face of fear we are given an adrenaline rush making us more aware of our surrounding’s giving us a sorta slow-mo effect on the world as we begin processing thoughts and the environment faster then we usually do. Truly the only point for fear is for it to be concurred, so when ever you feel scared just know that you can concur it, or there is always the option of running away.

They may also consume the tentacles of their host anemone.

Clown-fish work for sea anemone’s which means they attract prey for the sea anemone to eat and then gets it to kill the prey and they share the rewards, that is why clown-fish are colourful. symbiotic relationship. Clown fish are omnivores they eat algae, molluscs and crustaceans, the clown fish lours the prey to a sea anemone and then lets the sea anemone kill the prey and the both feed of it(the prey).

Harlequins a type of clowns

They usually are entertainment for a person of authority, but usually the Harlequin would disobey the authority and usually follow a love interest.

Pablo Picasso, his best known alter ego was a Harlequin

The Simpsons:

Krusty the clown is a character from the Simpsons, he is constantly getting acquiesced of committing crimes, he is someone who entertains children as a clown, producing poor quality and dangerous “children’s toys”. Krusty must have broken out of the brainwashing early and so negotiated with the clown government to getting a job and lots of money, if they didn’t comply he would break the government apart. But he still must have some link to he brainwashed days because of how often he is acquiesced of committing crimes.

Psycho Bob is another example of a “clown” he has had a objective given to him by the clown government to kill Bart Simpson but constantly hindered by series of events, stopping him from completing his mission, and now is completely obsessed with completing his mission.

Season 2 Episode 23 The Thaw:

Some of the Voyager crew and the remaining inhabitants of a destroyed trading post are in cryosleep, but there is an A.I entertaining the participants, when the participants started worrying about if they would survive or not then the A.I responded and created an environment full of clowns and one can only describe as a carnival, the A.I created this environment produced an the environment that it thought the participants would want to be in so since they were scared it produced the carnival, they turned something that some believe to be fun and exciting into a nightmare.

That is how we deal with fear, laughing in the face of fear is how you concur fear. Fear is also produced by evil so when you are laughing at clowns you are laughing at true evil.

Clowns are not what you think they are

Clowns are scary. Most people know clowns as the entertainment of a circus but what if I told that was all an act, what if I told you clowns are not what you think they are.

Clowns are commonly known to be performers at circuses and other outdoor carnival events, So far so good…, but clowns are actually super evil, their acts are just what they are, acts to let the clowns fool you into thinking that they couldn’t be considered for performing a any heinous crime.

Clowns can been known for wearing thick makeup, this is to mask the criminals real face, the makeup is used to disguising the face under the makeup. Clowns put so much makeup on that they are able to change the shape and size of their ‘face’ at will. This is so that when they break the law they can’t be tracked or spotted because the shape of there face is different.

You often see clowns in really baggy clothes, this is usually thought to be funny because it makes the person look large, clumsy or exaggerate body movements but truly it is for stashing stolen goods and weapons of mass destruction. Their clothes are stretchy and so can store more stolen goods then what a normal burglar can in their pants or duffel bag.

The reason for the clowns big shoes is because they are used to scale walls, they also contain magnets and spikes so they can scale roofs or metal structures, the bigger portion of the shoe contains equipment used to break into buildings, like walls or windows.

A clown wears a red nose for one reason and one reason only, it is used for head butting you. A spike comes out of the nose and pricks you, it contains a numbing agent to slow you down so they can get away faster and with less resistance.

When someone goes to clown college it is because that person has been brainwashed to become part of the clown army, clown college isn’t where people go to learn how to fall properly or how to make balloon animals it is where people go to learn to rob banks and hack into mainframes and steal company information.

The most shocking part of all this is that when a clown robs a bank or steals something, they only earn 10% of what they retrieved, this means that all clowns are really poor and angry because they are not cared for.

When a clown breaks free of the brainwashing and runs away from the evil clown giants(giants as in the companies are massive), the person is usually so brain-damaged that they can not reform to their original life again, so they usually go live in sewers eating stray cats and dogs and sometimes small children in yellow raincoat that are watching a paper boat that is floating down a rain drain.

During my childhood I use to love clowns, I thought they were funny and silly, but then one afternoon after being at a carnival and having a great time, my family and I arrived home to having the house ransacked. Lamps broken, draws left open and thrown across the room, scratches and dents throughout walls and furniture in the house. I rushed straight to my bedroom to find white paint aligning my room and massive foot prints scattered across my floor. The police had decided that some cat burglar had broken into our house and that they had spilt all their laser revealing powder, but I think it is a lie, I know that clowns broke into our house and tried to steal all our expensive things.

If you meet one of these clowns you should call the police as soon as you see them, not because the police will a do anything it is just the mention of a rogue clown in the police system will let the clown government know and they will come “get” him.

Really it is not the clowns fault it is the organisations that are brainwashing innocent people in to becoming lethal weapons against the persons will, as people who know about the evil clown organisations we should do everything in our power to bring down these evil organisations.

Harlaquins, picaso

Clownfish, sea-erchans

Growing old is mandatory but growing up is completely optional: Persuasive Speech

It is known that ageing is mandatory, but what if i told you that growing up was optional. Today I will be giving strong reasoning to why you should grow old but never grow up.

I bet you have all thought about what you have planned in the future, where you want to go and how you want to get there. But have you ever thought about how these major events might actually change who you are as a person. We are told that we need to grow up, we have to become mature, we are told that if we age and grow up we are entrusted with more responsibilities and the more aged and grown up we get we are trusted and are known as wise.

But what if I told you that will you are gaining all these responsibilities you are losing a very important part of a personality, your optimism, your need to know, your curiosity. You lose these because when you diced that you want to take up more responsibilities you run out of time to accommodate these feature of your personality.

Examples of people who have lost that part of themselves are, lawyers, politicians and police officers. These people are usually known for being blunt, heartless and care about nothing but themselves, how they hide this from people is by having jobs that associate themselves with other people to seem like they are helping people but truly they are only accommodating themselves.

I am sure that all of you have a family member that you look up to, who you think are awesome, just think for a second about how that person, do they act erratic, do they act immature and childish. These people are the people who haven’t grow up but like all of us will have to succumb to the torture of age. But unlike all the people previously mentioned these people have optimism and hope, these are the people who see things as they could in a positive light, instead of what things are in a negative light. If you know someone like this you should strive to stay optimistic and have hope like them.

NCEA Formal writing 1.5, Literary Essay: Macbeth

Through out the play Macbeth, Shakespeare demonstrates that power and security is harmful for someone – especially if that power or security is enquired at any means. To demonstrate this concept Shakespeare uses a variety of language techniques.

During the beginning of the play you are introduced to a brave Macbeth who had just turn the tides for Scotland in the war against Norway, Captain “Doubtful it stood, As two spent swimmers, that do cling together And choke their air…”, the captain is referring to the battle as a standstill, they were equally matched and equally tired, then he mentions “brave Macbeth…” coming to turn the tides in Scotland’s favour, Captain “Disdaining Fortune, with is brandished steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like Valour’s minion, carved out his passage, till he faced the slave;…”. The Captain referring to Macbeth’s sword was cutting through the enemy like a hot blade through water, leaving a lingering mist of execution behind him, Macbeth is also refered to as valour’s minion meaning that for Macbeth to achieve these actions he had to be a minion of bravery itself. When the Captain refers to the Macbeth facing the “slave;” he is referring to the Thane of Cawdor, he had decided that King Duncan (the King of Scotland at the time) was going to lose and so sided with Norway, and so once Macbeth had helped win the war for Scotland he captured and handed the Thane of Cawdor.

At the beginning of the play Macbeth is known as a great warrior and is praised for his actions this is quite ironic because of Macbeth’s actions later in the play.

During Act 1 Scene 3 Macbeth and Banquo are introduced to the witches (for Banquo this will be the first and the last time that he will observe the witches), both Macbeth and Banquo are confused about the figures standing in front of then, they are confused about what they are and what gender they are. Banquo “What are these, So withered and so wild in their attire That look not like th’ inhabitants o’ the earth And yet are on’t?…”. Shakespeare uses meter shows that even describing the witches has an unearthly effect on someone, when someone of power or important is speaking in Shakespeare’s play’s they speak in an Iambic pentameter. An iamb is a combination of one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. Therefore, iambic pentameter has five stressed syllables and ten syllables total. (referenced used Literary Devices) during Banquo’s description of the witches, at the end of each sentence he finishes 1 iamb short and so doesn’t complete the Iambic pentameter making the description sound broken up and unformed. This is demonstrated again further into the play when Macbeth looses his wife.

Just before Macbeth kills the king he has a hallucination of a dagger before him. Macbeth “Is this a dagger I see before me,…”. For this scene Shakespeare could have had a knife floating in the air or no knife at all, this relates to having the audience feel like they might be just as insane as the character, or not having the knife there could show how insane Macbeth is to the audience, this is a dramatic effect because it can be interpreted so many ways by the play writer or the audience.

Similar to the sence above this is in the preference of the director wether to have Banquo’s ghost visible to the audience or not. This happens after Macbeth is crowned king and the lords are having dinner with Macbeth to celebrate him becoming king, little do they know that before the dinner Macbeth had sent 2 mercenaries to go kill Banquo and his son so Macbeth can feel more secure, because Banquo was the only other person to see the witches who had predicted all the events that have occurred. Once he is killed he is then later than see by Macbeth while he is dining with the lords. Having the audience observe Banquo dead in the dining hall or witnessing him die and not having any of the other characters know is dramatic irony.

After killing Banquo Macbeth feels the need to summon the witches and for them to tell him if he will be defeated or not, for security. Once he has found the witches, he commands them to tell him what is going to happen. He is then introduced to the Hecate who summons apparitions to tell what will happen to Macbeth, the first apparition warns him about “Macduff; Beware the Thane of Fife”, the second apparition states that he should “Laugh to scorn The power of man, for none of woman born shall harm Macbeth”, the third and last apparition explains that “Macbeth shall never vanquished be, until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill…”, all 3 apparitions are examples of the supernatural. The purpose of the apparitions as explained in the previous scene the witches are wanting to give Macbeth a false scene of security and the second and third apparition are doing so, stating that he doesn’t have to worry about being harmed because only a man not women born can harm him and that he will only die when the Wood of Birnam reaches Dunsinane (the location of the Scottish castle where the throne lies.), all these goad Macbeth into executing more violent acts because he feels like he is invincible.

Since Macbeth has received the crown, Scotland has been decaying. The morning of Duncan’s Death Macduff is talking to the Porter about how the day is so dismal, you later find out that people have witness Duncan’s horses eating each other. Rosse was having a conversation with an old man and in the 70 years he can remember, all the dreadful memories, the past week has made it look like a joke, Old Man Hours dreadful and things strange, but this sore night Hath trifled former knowings., he mentioned that he had seen an ordinary Owl take down and kill a hawk, Old Man tow’ring in her pride of place, Was by a mousing owl hawked at and killed”, Rosse explains that Duncan’s horses had become wild and that they were being obedient, it was like they had waged war on man kind, the old man then goes on to mention that the horses had ended up eating each other “‘Tis said they eat each other”, these are all examples of the nature becoming unbalanced and that Macbeth’s actions and what Macbeth becomes is making all these strange and horrible events occur.

After being informed that Lady Macbeth is dead, Macbeth performs a soliloquy which demonstrates further on the uncompleted meter that indicates that he is not sure about his thoughts or feelings. During Macbeth’s soliloquy he mentions, “a poor player That struts and frets his hour upon a stage, and then is heard no more:…”, Macbeth mentioning that life is like an actor on stage, there to entertain, but also once you leave the stage once your hour is up you are never heard from again. This is ironic for the character to say this because in the case of the play Macbeth is a puppet on a stage entertaining and then fading once his hour is up, he also mentions “it is a tale Told by and idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing”, Macbeth as a character has decided that all his actions even though a lot has occurred because of them, they mean nothing, his actions haven’t affected a bigger picture, they have just affected his world.

Shakespeare has used a wide variety of language techniques throughout the play Macbeth, above are a few language technique’s and explainations that were used to demonstrate an idea that shows that equiring power and security at any cost.

Practice Essay

Having Power and seeking security can be quite harmful – Especially when you strive to gain power at any cost.

Shakespeare demonstrates this idea throughout the play Macbeth, using Macbeth’s descended into insanity and a range of language features, Shakespeare demonstrates this idea.

Paragraph 1:

During the beginning of the play (Act 1, Scene 2) you are met with Duncan, Malcolm and the Captain. They are talking about how the war is at a stand still Captain “Doubtful it stood, As two spent swimmers, that do cling together And choke their art.” The literary device is a simile (he is refusing the battle to, 2 drowning swimmers that fighting each other to stay above water). The captain then goes onto talk about the turning of the tides, what had happened to seal Scottish victory, Captain “For Brave Macbeth, Disdaining Fortune, with his brandished steel, which smoked with bloody execution, Like Valour’s minion, carved out his passage, Till he faced the slave”, the captain referring to Macbeth as ‘Valour’s minion’ is suggesting that Macbeth’s actions were so brave that only a servant of Bravery itself could fulfill the actions that Macbeth achieved. All this praise is well deserved, Macbeth fighting carving a path through an army to reach the scoundrel the Thane of Cawdor, who had betrayed Duncan and sided with the enemy, Norway, blood smoking off his brandished steel Macbeth striked down the former Thane of Cawdor, Claiming victory to Scotland.

Paragraph 2:

Macbeth and Banquo are first introduced to the witches (for Banquo the first and the last) after the battle is one when they both are celebrating the victory (Act 1 Scene 3). The way Banquo and Macbeth describe the witches is an indication of how supernatural they are, Banquo “What are these, So withered and so wild in their attire That look not like th’ inhabitants o’ the earth And yet are on ‘t – (He speaks to the witches) Live you? or are you aught” at first glance Banquo is confident that these things are not of this earth and yet he is witnessing their presence in front of him. He then goes on to describe the witches in detail, Banquo “By each at once her choppy finger laying Upon her skinny lips: you should be women, And yet your beards forbid me to interpret That you are so.” Banquo is confused about their appearance because they look like women beside the beard across their face. Macbeth then confronts the witches to speak if they can, Witch 1 “All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!”Witch 2, All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!”Witch 3 “All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter”, Macbeth would be quite happy with this, he would be announced Thane of Cawdor and King, this sets the seed for Macbeth’s ambition to become king at any cost. Banquo wasnt as convinced, Banquo “Are ye fantastical, or that indeed Which outwardly ye show? My noble partner You greet with present grace, and great prediction Of noble having and royal hope…:to me you speak not. If you can look into the seed of time, And see which grain will grow, and which grain wont, Speak the to me,…” with this remark the witches state that, Witch 2 “Not so Happy yet much happier”Witch 3 “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be non: So all hail Macbeth and Banquo!, this imply that Banquo won’t be king “Not so Happy…” but will have descendents who will be kings, “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be non…”. After meeting with the witches Macbeth and Banquo are then located in King Duncan’s Palace with the king and his men, in this scene Macbeth is announced Thane of Cawdor, a prediction that the witches made that has been fulfilled. With this Macbeth decides to tell his wife about what has occurred and that King Duncan will be joining them at their castle.

Paragraph 3:

Once Macbeth has returned back to his castle his wife greets him but then ridicules him about how he is weak and wont strive to achieve success “Your face, My thane, is a book, where men May read strange matters. To beguile the time, look like the time, bear welcome in yout eye”

Lady Macbeth Act 5 Scene 1

During Act 5 scene 1 we are introduced to the Gentel-Woman and the doctor, the doctor is frustrated for being summoned for 2 nights by the gentel-woman “I have two nights watched with you, but can perceive no truth in your report. When was it she last walked”. In this passage the doctor meantions about someone sleep walkwalking, we are to presoom that since this scene is located in Dunsinane castle and Macbeth has just been crowned king that Macbeth could be the ine sleep walking, we are then told that “Since his majesty went to the field, I have seen her rise from her bed, throw her night-gown upon her, unlock her closet, take forth paper, fold it, write upon’t, read it, afterwards seal it, and again return to bed; yet all this while in the most fast sleep”. From this we find that since Macbeth leaving the castle to the field Lady Macbeth has been writing and then reading the text in her sleep. The doctors asked “besides her walking and other actual perfomances, what, at any time, have you heard her say?” the Gentel-Woman awensers this by saying “That, sir, which I will not report after her”, this inpluys that what ever she has heard Lady macbeth say is so gastidly and unnatural that she can’t repeat it, the doctor then presses her to repeat what Lady Macbeth has said but she stays deturminded not to.

Lady Macbeth enters the room, the doctor notices that her eyes are open “You see, her eyes are open.” Gentel-Woman “Ay, but their sense are shut”. Will Lady Macbeth is standing there she looks like she is scrubbing her hands and then she speaks “Yet here’s a spot”, she then goes on to say “Out, damned spot! … – Yet who would have thought the man to have so much blood in him” these events can be related back to just after Macbeth had gone and killed King Duncan, he had stated that “”

Practice Macbeth Essay

Paragraph 1: Talk about an idea Shakespeare was portraying through the play, give examples of shakespeare referring to this idea and how the characters throughout the play are developing this idea.

When actors perform or are practicing the play it is known as the “Scottish play” instead of the “Play of Macbeth” because it is thought that the play is cursed and that if you speak the plays name will performing or practicing the play you be cursed with bad luck, this is all to Macbeth’s degeneration of sanity throughout the play, he goes through stages of losing his sanity: at the start of the he is sane and is known as a great soldier, then he meets the supernatural (the witches), they tell Macbeth that he will be king Witch 1 “All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Glamis”, Witch 2 “All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor” Witch 3 “All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter” and that Banquo is told that not him but his children will be king also Witch 1 “Lesser than Macbeth, and greater” indicates that the witch was talking about someone these then Macbeth but also greater so this means that Banquo is lesser because Macbeth is king but Banquo is greater because his family line becomes the royal family, Witch 3 “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none:…” . After this event Macbeth tells his wife and by coincidence the king of Scotland King Duncan and they plan to murder the king in his sleep.

Since shakespeare was only able to use words to portray all this information he had to use rhythm, timing, language features and pentameters to demonstrate hierarchy, tone of voice and state of mind. An example of this is at which the different rhythm Macbeth is speaking compared to the witches. Macbeth is speaking in an iambic pentameter were as the witches aren’t speaking in any pentameter, this shows that the witches are not of this world,

To demonstrate all the features of this scene Shakespeare uses

Paragraph 2: talk about the murder of King duncan and how this starts Macbeth on the dark road of cheating and murder. also talk about how the affect of killing the king affects the earth and how it affects Macbeth’s mental state.

When the king stays
