Practice Macbeth Essay

Paragraph 1: Talk about an idea Shakespeare was portraying through the play, give examples of shakespeare referring to this idea and how the characters throughout the play are developing this idea.

When actors perform or are practicing the play it is known as the “Scottish play” instead of the “Play of Macbeth” because it is thought that the play is cursed and that if you speak the plays name will performing or practicing the play you be cursed with bad luck, this is all to Macbeth’s degeneration of sanity throughout the play, he goes through stages of losing his sanity: at the start of the he is sane and is known as a great soldier, then he meets the supernatural (the witches), they tell Macbeth that he will be king Witch 1 “All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Glamis”, Witch 2 “All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor” Witch 3 “All hail, Macbeth! that shalt be king hereafter” and that Banquo is told that not him but his children will be king also Witch 1 “Lesser than Macbeth, and greater” indicates that the witch was talking about someone these then Macbeth but also greater so this means that Banquo is lesser because Macbeth is king but Banquo is greater because his family line becomes the royal family, Witch 3 “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none:…” . After this event Macbeth tells his wife and by coincidence the king of Scotland King Duncan and they plan to murder the king in his sleep.

Since shakespeare was only able to use words to portray all this information he had to use rhythm, timing, language features and pentameters to demonstrate hierarchy, tone of voice and state of mind. An example of this is at which the different rhythm Macbeth is speaking compared to the witches. Macbeth is speaking in an iambic pentameter were as the witches aren’t speaking in any pentameter, this shows that the witches are not of this world,

To demonstrate all the features of this scene Shakespeare uses

Paragraph 2: talk about the murder of King duncan and how this starts Macbeth on the dark road of cheating and murder. also talk about how the affect of killing the king affects the earth and how it affects Macbeth’s mental state.
