Setting

Initial Setting:
Snow, train, dead boy, little quotes of German, inpatients towards death.

These ideas in the setting tells the reader the the time era is around the beginning of world war 2.

Setting when the book thief is shown her foster parents and neighbor-hood:
Once the character starts to accept the situation that they are in, they describe the scene with a lot of happy emotions, even when the day is bad or the surroundings aren’t that pleasant, the author portrays the character with a lot of happy emotions towards the situation

Setting 1: Historical Setting

  • Research Germany under Hitler’s reign.  Look into the politics of the time, the class separation, treatment of the Jewish, the position of women and their roles, and uncover any other important information.
  • Cover some of the similarities and differences between Germany in the 1939 – 1943 and the present day.
  • Discuss the setting of Molching, Germany; write about the way in which the town is ‘separated’ and how the setting is influential in presenting the text’s ideas.

Germany was controlled by Adolf Hitler who was the leader of the Nazi party, the NSDAP. Adolf Hitler obtained this power by be elected to be chancellor in 1933, turning the Weimar democracy in to a Totalitarian Dictatorship. He then took control of Germany through using Article 48.

Two factors that contribute to the atmosphere;
Sight and Sound.
Throughout the book the author has described the environment visually by describing the state of the snow in the town of Mulching, where the kids are playing on the street, using lots of metaphors to describe the current state of the atmosphere. He also describes the state of the atmosphere using sound, this relates to how loud the colors are.
